The Mount Stewart wildfire, located in the community of Port Edward, has been accurately measured to have burned 3.7 hectares. The cause of this fire is under investigation.
Local RCMP evacuated 20 homes and a campground early Friday evening, and the evacuation ended by 9 p.m. Friday. No structures were immediately threatened. The fire is burning in slash and standing timber at the northwest base of Mount Stewart.
Nineteen BC Wildfire Service personnel are helping the Port Edward Fire Department at this fire. Heavy equipment and air support, including helicopters and air tankers, worked over the weekend. Good progress was made and the fire is now in patrol, meaning crews search for remaining smoke and hot spots.
