The Government of B.C. is suspending angling on the Lower Mamquam River due to conservation concerns and low flows.
Effective Saturday, Aug. 22 through Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015, all angling in the Lower Mamquam River, downstream of the CN Railway Bridge to the river’s confluence with the Squamish River is prohibited. The remaining portions of the Mamquam River are already closed to angling and will remain closed. The angling closure is located in Wildlife Management Unit 2-7.
The closure has been put in place to protect fish stocks at a time when they are vulnerable due to low flows. The low water and aggregation of fish in the area has led to conservation and compliance issues, and will protect both bull trout and salmon populations.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has also closed the Lower Mamquam and the two closures will support one another. B.C. government fisheries biologists are monitoring approximately 30 other key angling streams throughout the province. If conditions warrant, additional closures are possible.
Angling closures are enabled through the British Columbia sport fishing regulations of the federal Fisheries Act.
