The BC Coroners Service, along with Squamish RCMP and Squamish Search and Rescue, would like to extend their thanks to the climbing community of Squamish, whose quick response allowed for the recovery of skeletal remains from the Stwamus Chief.
Earlier this week, the BC Coroners Service asked for information about the possible unwitting interference by a person or persons unknown in a planned recovery operation for skeletal remains that had been found on Feb. 26, 2015.
As a result of this request, the remains have since been turned over to the BC Coroners Service Identification and Disaster Response Unit for further analysis. As anticipated, the person’s involvement had been entirely innocent with no malicious intent.
The BC Coroners Service would like to remind everyone, as you head into the back country of British Columbia, that if you find bones, other potential human remains or any other unusual circumstances, the best things to do are:
- leave the material in place,
- note your GPS location,
- take photos if possible, and
- inform your local RCMP detachment or the BC Coroners Service of your discovery as soon as possible.
