The BC Coroners Service has announced new dates for the public inquest into the death of Ernest Shawn Moosomin.
The inquest will now begin Nov. 2, 2015, at the BC Coroners Court in Burnaby.
The inquest was originally scheduled to begin Sept. 14, but scheduling conflicts necessitated the change.
Mr. Moosomin, aged 41, was taken into custody by the South Coast BC Transportation Authority Police Service (Transit Police) on a bus near the Surrey Central bus loop late in the evening of July 31, 2014. The officers transported him in their patrol car to Surrey Memorial Hospital for examination, but when they arrived there, Mr. Moosomin was found to be in medical distress in the rear seat of the car. He was pronounced deceased shortly afterwards.
Presiding coroner Dr. D. Kelly Barnard and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses under oath to determine the facts surrounding this death. The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances.
An inquest is a formal process that allows for public presentation of evidence relating to a death.
