The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died after his vehicle went into the water off the Mill Bay ferry ramp on Sept. 18, 2015.

He is John William Barton, aged 89, from the Victoria suburb of Saanich.

Mr. Barton was seen to drive his SUV along the ramp to the Mill Bay ferry at about 8:10 a.m. on Sept. 18, crash through a barrier, and go into the water. The ferry was not at the dock at the time.

An RCMP Dive Team found Mr. Barton still in his vehicle in about 20 metres of water. He was deceased at the scene.

The BC Coroners Service continues to investigate this death.

The family of Mr. Barton has been notified of his death. On behalf of family members, the BC Coroners Service asks that the media respect their privacy at this difficult time.
