The BC Coroners Service has announced that a public inquest will be held into the death of Mehrdad Bayrami.

The inquest will take place beginning Feb. 9, 2016, at the Coroners Court in Burnaby.

Mr. Bayrami, aged 48, died on Nov. 18, 2012, in Royal Columbia Hospital, 10 days after he was shot by police following an interaction with police Emergency Response Teams outside the Starlight Casino in New Westminster.

Presiding coroner Dr. D. Kelly Barnard and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses under oath to determine the facts surrounding this death. The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances.

An inquest is a formal process that allows for public presentation of evidence relating to a death.
