The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died following an incident at the offices of the Bridge River Indian Band on Oct. 14, 2015.
The man is David Allan Patrick James, aged 22, of Lillooet.
Mr. James was involved in an incident involving both civilians and the Lillooet RCMP at about 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 14, at the band offices of the Xwisten First Nation, located in Bridge River, a small community about nine kilometres northwest of Lillooet. Mr. James was noted to have become unresponsive at the scene and could not be resuscitated.
The BC Coroners Service, the RCMP and the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) continue to investigate this death and the surrounding circumstances.
The mandate of the IIO is to investigate whether any offences under the Criminal Code or any other act may have been committed by the police officers involved. The mandate of the BC Coroners Service in such cases is broader, and the BC Coroners Service will look at the events which led up to the final fatal outcome and whether there are reasonable and practical recommendations that could be made which might prevent future deaths in similar circumstances.
