The BC Coroners Service has announced that a public inquest will be held into the death of Cheryl Ann Cowan.
The inquest will take place beginning Jan. 11, 2016, at the Coroners Court in Burnaby.
Ms. Cowan, aged 58, died Dec. 23, 2014, while in the custody of the Vancouver Police Department. Ms. Cowan was arrested at about 6:30 a.m. on Dec. 15 by Vancouver Police and was transported to the Vancouver City Jail in a police prisoner wagon. When the wagon arrived at the jail, Ms. Cowan was found to be in medical distress. She was transported to St. Paul’s Hospital but died there eight days later.
Presiding coroner Matthew Brown and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses under oath to determine the facts surrounding this death. The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances.
An inquest is a formal process that allows for public presentation of evidence relating to a death.
