British Columbians exploring career options, or helping their children map out their futures, have a pair of new online tools available to help them find their fit in B.C.’s growing and strong economy.

My Blueprint Builder - a one-stop career planning tool on WorkBC.ca - connects with skills-training information, local job-market background and financial-aid options throughout the province, making it easier for people to find the information they need. It also includes the Career Compass, a new interactive tool.

The tools were unveiled today by Shirley Bond, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour, while attending the Premier’s Natural Resource Forum in Prince George.

My Blueprint Builder is an online career tool kit allowing users to personalize a skills-training plan and build their own personal online Blueprint profile including ideas on where to go for training and what kind of financial aid might be available. Users can save their profile and share My Blueprint Builder on social media or via email.

For the undecided, the Career Compass tool includes a short quiz that will suggest three industries and five careers based on answers. It also analyzes the latest local labour-market data indicating what jobs are in demand in what regions.

My Blueprint Builder and Career Compass are two of the latest actions items completed to meet commitments made in B.C.’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint. Launched April 2014, the Blueprint ensures students have a clear and seamless path right from school through the workplace, putting British Columbians first in line for in-demand jobs throughout the province.

Through B.C.’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint, the government is building a strong training foundation for workers to prepare for future job opportunities, because the better prepared British Columbians are, the more successful they will be in finding meaningful jobs and careers.

Quotes:

Shirley Bond, Minister of Jobs, Tourism, Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour −

“My Blueprint Builder is a great one-stop on line hub with a vast array of career-planning information - available where and when people need it. Like a fully stocked tool box…. with the right tools, people can gain confidence to build a career path and find their fit in today’s growing and changing economy. Meeting this B.C.’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint commitment means there has never been a better way - or a better time -- to explore careers in construction, resource sectors and technical occupations.”

Andrew Wilkinson, Minister of Advanced Education −

“Information is vital when making a decision as important as your future career - and, you can never have too much. Students need the facts on career options, labour-market demand and student financial-aid information so that they can find their best fit in the workplace.”

Peter Fassbender, Minister of Education −

“Choosing a career in a world that changes so quickly can be very challenging. My Blueprint Builder makes it easier for B.C. families, students and educators to research the jobs with promise and chart a course to get there. ”

Quick facts:

  • By 2022, B.C. is expecting one million job openings in B.C created by retirements and the province's growing economy.
  • 44% of these will be in skilled trades and technical occupations.
