Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism Teresa Wat has issued the following statement:
“Each year, March 21 is recognized around the globe as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The United Nations proclaimed the date in 1966 to bring the international community together in their efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
“Our role in government is to create an environment in British Columbia where an inclusive and diverse population supports our shared communities. Over the past three years, an average of $1.7 million has been spent each year on funding for programs and measures designed to educate against racism and hate, encourage multiculturalism through community engagement, and leverage our multicultural advantage to promote international trade.
“Some of the programs we offer include “Organizing Against Racism and Hate”, which helps smaller communities better address incidents of racism and hate crime; “Unlearn Racism”, which is designed for youth aged 12 to 16 years and challenges the status quo by putting aside the practice of discrimination that is fuelled by historical events and past perceptions; and “Know Hate”, which was developed in collaboration with the BC Hate Crimes Team and Abbotsford Community Services and provides awareness and information about what constitutes a hate crime, reporting information and links to resources for victims.
“It is up to all of us to educate ourselves and speak out against racist behaviours when we encounter them. Together we can ensure that multiculturalism flourishes and grows for the benefit of everyone today and for future generations.”
