New Brunswick Premier Brian Gallant and Premier Christy Clark met in Vancouver today to discuss co-operation in areas of mutual interest, including job creation and economic growth.

The Premiers agreed to continue their work together for prosperity in both provinces, contributing to a stronger Canada. British Columbia and New Brunswick have worked together on a number of initiatives, most recently co-leading a Premiers’ Working Group on renewal of federal-provincial labour-market training agreements.

“I look forward to our continued collaboration on developing a skilled workforce and improving the abilities of businesses to start-up, thrive, and create jobs in our provinces,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “Though we are on opposite coasts, we share the goal of wanting to grow our respective economies.”

Last year, British Columbia and New Brunswick signed an MOU to allow apprentices to be able to seamlessly work in either province to achieve their Red Seal certificate, and move freely between the two provinces to take advantage of job opportunities.

“British Columbia and New Brunswick will both benefit from access to a deep pool of skilled workers - and helping connect them with opportunities, even if they’re across the country,” said Premier Christy Clark. “It’s good to see Premier Gallant continuing his province’s leadership role.”

Premiers Gallant and Clark also discussed best practices and shared approaches to the demographic challenges Canada faces. Both provinces have agreed on the need for designated federal funding to address seniors’ care.

As a co-chair of the Canadian Energy Strategy, Premier Gallant briefed his colleague on progress toward finalizing the strategy, which will present a forward-looking vision for the responsible development of Canada’s vast energy resources. The strategy is to be presented to Premiers when they meet this summer.
