We know the clock doesn’t cater to just one time zone when it comes to international sporting events, so government has created flexibility, allowing liquor establishments in B.C. to host early morning screenings – provided no liquor is served.
Earlier this year, sports fans said they wanted the chance to watch the Rugby World Cup at their favourite pub and we listened. From Sept. 18 to Oct. 31, 2015, bars, pubs and clubs will be able to open early, so British Columbians can enjoy the matches, camaraderie and full sporting experience in their community.
Health and Safety
- After reviewing B.C.’s liquor policy, the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch (LCLB) has agreed to earlier openings, provided no liquor is served.
- It is important to strike a balance – having fair policies, while also understanding that we have limitations on liquor service hours to protect public health and safety.
- B.C.’s maximum hours of liquor service – between 9 a.m. and 4 a.m. – are some of the longest of any Canadian jurisdiction.
- Serving liquor prior to 9 a.m. is prohibited by regulation.
Cutting Red Tape for Businesses
- The LCLB has made it easy. Liquor primary establishments don’t have to apply for the change – they just need to make sure they understand the rules which are available on the LCLB website: www.pssg.gov.bc.ca/lclb/docs-forms/policy-directive-2015-08.pdf
- Licensees are encouraged to check with their local government to ensure there are no local restrictions on hours of operation.
