BGC Engineering Incorporated of Vancouver took the top award for Specialized Engineering Services at the 11th annual Deputy Minister’s Consulting Engineers Awards, for the South Taylor Hill Project on Highway 97 located south of the community of Taylor, approximately 20 kilometres from Fort St. John.
The firm was awarded a $1.45 million contract to deliver a complex detailed geotechnical design on an accelerated schedule to meet the project tender deadline. The highly motivated design team used geotechnical 3D modelling to demonstrate innovative geotechnical design solutions for construction, and provided the ministry comfort and confidence that the new slope design would mitigate the landslide challenges.
One important design mitigation measure BGC Engineering Incorporated within the more active slide areas was the requirement for staged construction techniques, including the installation of monitoring instrumentation to control the pace of construction and keep the site safe.
Other finalists for Specialized Engineering Services were Capilano Maritime Design Ltd. of North Vancouver for the Upper Arrow Lake Ferry Replacement Project near Naskup and Thurber Engineering Ltd. of Vancouver for West Twin Bridge near McBride.
