Safety improvements, including LED arrow signs and pavement markings, are coming to Highway 97 at Monte Lake this spring. Safety improvements are an important part of B.C. on the Move, the Government of B.C.’s new 10-year transportation plan.
The improvements at Monte Lake will increase safety in the area for all motorists, local residents and recreation users, and are the result of a recent safety review of this section of Highway 97.
New and innovative technology plays a big role in these safety improvements. Vehicle-activated LED arrow signs will be installed at both the north and south ends of the corridor to guide drivers around the curves. If a driver is entering the curve too fast, these signs will activate and alert drivers to slow down to a safe speed. In addition, pedestrian signs outlined with LEDs will be installed at the south end by the Monte Lake RV and Campground, and will illuminate to warn motorists that pedestrians may be walking along or crossing the highway.
The ministry will also install speed-reduction pavement markings on the curve at the north end of this section of Highway 97 near Paxton Road. The road markings act as a traffic-calming device that creates an optical illusion for drivers through the curve, which in turn leads them to slow down.
Work will be done this spring as soon as weather conditions allow. This project is expected to cost approximately $125,000.
B.C. on the Move is government’s new 10-year plan for the improvement of the province’s transportation network. It provides a comprehensive road map for transportation investments and strategic policy actions over the next decade. The actions prioritized in B.C. on the Move will grow the economy, maintain and replace aging infrastructure, and support trade for B.C.’s expanding resource sectors through Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway.
Over the next three years, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure will invest up to $2.5 billion to improve British Columbia’s transportation network.
B.C. on the Move was developed incorporating feedback received from a wide-ranging public engagement, during which over 12,500 survey responses were received from British Columbians across the province, and the B.C. on the Move website was visited over 44,000 times.
