Backgrounders

Work completed, underway and planned

Work completed:

  • Intersection improvements at Clearwater Valley Road, Orchard Lake Road, Walterdale Road and Agate Bay Road.
  • New passing lanes southbound at McLure and Chappel Creek.
  • Shoulder widening, new guardrail and rock slope stabilization through the Fish Trap Canyon.
  • New guardrail along sections of the corridor including north of Little Fort, Exlou and Heffley Canyon.
  • Extensive resurfacing, including last year’s $3.8-million project from Little Fort to Blackwater Road.

New work being done this summer:

  • Two new passing lanes are being constructed at Chappel Creek northbound and Camp Creek southbound.
  • More guardrail will be installed north of Little Fort.
  • Installation of over 3,000 square metres of additional slope mesh in the Fish Trap Canyon.
  • A new speed reader board has been purchased for use in the Thompson-Nicola area, including Highway 5.

Planning and engineering work underway for future corridor improvements including:

  • An assessment for intersection improvements at Clearwater Village Road.
  • A left-turn lane at the intersection of Highways 5 and 24.
  • New passing lanes at Darfield with intersection improvements at Boulder Mountain Road.
  • A northbound passing lane, south of McLure.

In addition to the improvements to this corridor listed above, the ministry has also:

  • Installed centreline rumble strips.
  • Installed two new changeable message signs northbound at Halston and Little Fort, to advise road users of conditions, highway incidents and general safety messages.
  • Refreshed deer-warning signs with enhanced reflectivity for driver awareness even in poor or night driving conditions. Signs were installed at locations with the highest deer collisions.
