A major four-lane expansion of Highway 97 between 74 Mile to 76 Mile is now complete.
Delivered one month ahead of schedule, approximately 4.3 kilometres of Highway 97 from 74 Mile to 76 Mile are now upgraded, tying together the previously completed Stormy and 70 Mile North four-lane sections located south of 100 Mile House.
“Four-laning the section between 74 Mile and 76 Mile marks an important milestone in our commitment to four-lane Highway 97 from Cache Creek to Prince George,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “This important route is a priority for the Province, and expanding the capacity will improve safety and relieve congestion for residents and tourists.”
The completion of this Cariboo Connector project means there is a continuous section of four-lane highway approximately 32 kilometres in length extending from just north of 70 Mile House to six kilometres south of the District of 100 Mile House. This expanded section of one of B.C.'s most important corridors will improve safety and efficiency for families, commercial traffic and tourists travelling this route.
“Highway 97 is a lifeline for Cariboo residents and a vital link for tourist and commercial traffic. The completion of this section of the Cariboo Connector increases safety and reliability for everyone who uses it,” said MLA for Fraser-Nicola Jackie Tegart.
All nine Cariboo Connector Phase 2 projects will be complete or underway by 2017. When completed, almost 50% of the 440-kilometre highway between Cache Creek and Prince George will be either three or four lanes.
The Cariboo Connector Program is a key component of the government’s B.C. on the Move 10-year plan for the improvement of the province’s transportation network. It provides a comprehensive road map for transportation investments and strategic policy actions over the next decade.
Over the next three years, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure will invest almost $2.5 billion to improve British Columbia’s transportation network.
