Advanced Education Minister Andrew Wilkinson made the following statement in recognition of the 40th anniversary of the College of the Rockies.
“In October 1975, the College of the Rockies opened its doors to students in the Cranbrook community as East Kootenay Community College.
“Over the past four decades, the college has seen enormous growth from the 543 students that enrolled during its first year of operations. More than 2,200 full-time equivalent students attended the College of the Rockies at seven campuses during the 2014-15 academic year, as well as approximately 8,000 part-time continuing education students, 1,000 online students and 200 international students.
“The College of the Rockies supports the goals of BC’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint by educating and training students for a range of in-demand jobs. The college has also expanded over the years to include programs and courses in other subject areas, including studies in business, health, fire services, global studies, kinesiology, information technology and more.
“In 2010, the College of the Rockies introduced its first degree program, the bachelor of business administration in sustainable business practices. The college also offers associate degrees in arts and science, as well as dual admission degree opportunities with post-secondary institutions in British Columbia and Alberta.
“The College of the Rockies has established itself as a significant local presence, serving a regional population of 85,000 and contributing more than $200 million to the local economy.
“My sincere congratulations to students, alumni, faculty and staff as they celebrate the 40th anniversary of College of the Rockies.”
