Hailed as a true leader with an ability to inspire all those around him, B.C. Conservation Officer Service (COS) Sgt. Josh Lockwood has been named the 2015 Outstanding Officer of the Year, by Environment Minister Mary Polak today.

Lockwood has always shown passion and dedication to the service. His leadership and years of experience in the organization have earned him the respect of his peers and supervisors. Lockwood is known as a source of motivation and support to officers around him, often acting as a mentor to fellow officers. He does everything in his power to enable his field officers to be successful.

Often referred to as the quarterback of new projects, Lockwood has spearheaded several programs for the COS. In 2015, he eagerly volunteered to represent the COS in its role with the Province’s new Invasive Mussel Defence Program, which helps ensure B.C. waterways remain free of invasive mussels.

Lockwood’s hard work over the years has touched many areas. His tireless efforts led to the implementation of a critical incident stress management team for the COS. Developed in 2011, the program helps officers who may need extra support.

Lockwood also finds time to join in fundraising and awareness events for Honour House, which provides a home and support for officers, first responders and their families. As a family man himself, he knows the importance of supporting families in the service who have a loved one needing medical attention.

Lockwood is also well respected by many First Nations communities throughout the province. The relationships he has developed help positively represent the COS in communities.

From local law enforcement to coaching the floor hockey mentoring program for youth, Lockwood is an outstanding individual both in and out of uniform. His enthusiasm and positivity are infectious to those around him.

As a sergeant, peer and mentor, Lockwood epitomizes the qualities of a truly outstanding conservation officer.

Lockwood is the 24th recipient of the Outstanding Officer of the Year Award.

Since 1992, the designation has been awarded annually to a conservation officer for going above and beyond the typical call of duty, exemplifying the values of the Conservation Officer Service: integrity, public service and protection of the environment.
