Residents of the Christina Lake, Grand Forks and Creston areas may experience smoky conditions today as a result of prescribed burning taking place in both Washington and Idaho.
The visibility and direction of the smoke’s travel will depend on weather conditions. However, smoke is expected to be visible in the Boundary and Creston areas along the Canada-U.S. border.
- The 325-hectare prescribed burn in the Colville National Forest in Washington State is part of the Summit-Pierre Fuels Reduction Project and is expected to continue periodically into June 2016.
- Several controlled burns are planned for the Priest Lake, Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry Ranger District areas in Idaho and those projects are also expected to continue into June 2016.
- The objectives for both of these projects are to improve wildlife habitat and reduce fire risks by removing accumulations of dense undergrowth.
