BC Wildfire Service crews will be conducting a burn trial east of Oliver on June 7, 2016, starting at about noon. Smoke may be visible in Oliver and surrounding areas.
Burn trials are conducted periodically throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre to assess fuel conditions on the forest floor. This low-intensity fire will be studied to assess fire behaviour potential related to a specific fuel type. This information helps the BC Wildfire Service determine the fire risk in a given area.
BC Wildfire Service personnel will be on site at all times to ensure that the fire does not spread beyond its intended size and is fully extinguished by the end of the day on June 7, 2016. A trial burn of this type generally does not exceed 50 metres by 50 metres.
The airtanker group based in Penticton will also be using this burn trial to run some practice exercises of its own, so nearby residents will see airtankers dropping retardant in the area.
