In an effort to protect sensitive alpine habitats, the Province is closing higher elevations of the Cayoosh and Shulaps mountain ranges to motor vehicle traffic.
Motor vehicles are no longer allowed above 1,920 metres on Cayoosh, Shulaps, Red, French, Hogback and China Head mountains (not including Yalakom-Big Bar Road), or on Nine Mile Ridge.
These alpine ecosystems provide important summer and spring habitat for grizzly bears, mule deer, mountain goats and California bighorn, and are vulnerable to damage from motor vehicles.
Quick Facts:
- Alpine ecosystems support fewer plants, compared to lower elevation habitats, due to a shorter growing season, prolonged snow cover, steep terrain, high winds, extremes of heat and cold, and intense ultraviolet radiation.
- It can take centuries for damaged alpine vegetation to recover.
