Effective at noon on Monday, Aug. 29, 2016, Category 2 open burns are once again allowed throughout the Northwest Fire Centre. While fire danger ratings have dropped with the recent rain, the public is encouraged to still exercise caution with any campfires or outdoor burning.
The prohibition on the use of some fire-related equipment has also been lifted, including:
- fireworks, including firecrackers
- burning barrels
- sky lanterns
- air curtain burners
- exploding binary targets
Anyone planning to burn a pile larger than two metres high by three metres wide, or conduct a grass burn larger than 0.2 hectares (Category 3 fires), must obtain a burn registration number ahead of time by calling 1 888 797-1717.
If the fire escapes, the person responsible may be fined up to $100,000 and held liable for fire suppression costs and damages. It is the responsibility of individuals to ensure that they are burning in a safe, responsible manner that is in accordance with current restrictions.
