The BC Wildfire Service is planning to conduct three prescribed burns in the Lillooet Fire Zone between Thursday, Sept. 22 and Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Smoke and flames may be visible from the Village of Lytton and from Highway 1.

The exact timing of these burns will depend on weather and site conditions. They will proceed only if fire behaviour conditions are suitable and will allow for quick smoke dissipation and low to moderate fire intensity.

Trained wildfire crews will carefully monitor these fires and ensure that they are completely extinguished.

The three planned burn sites are:

• Loring Way 1 – This 14.6-hectare burn will be conducted about two kilometres southeast of Lytton, uphill from Highway 1.
• Loring Way 2 – This 6.8-hectare burn will take place about 2.5 kilometres southeast of Lytton, uphill from Highway 1.  
• Village of Lytton Kumsheen High School – This 3.4-hectare burn will be done about one kilometre south of Lytton. It will be completed over the weekend so that classes at the school are not disrupted.

The goal of these burns is to mimic naturally occurring ground fires and reduce the level of dead and combustible material in grassland and open forest areas. Removal of these forest fuels helps to reduce the threat of interface wildfires and protect communities.
