Quotes:
Jordan Sturdy, MLA for West Vancouver-Sea to Sky –
“Whistler is a global destination that draws people from all over the world looking to live and work, creating real challenges to the rental market. Our government is investing in affordable housing to help ensure those working in Whistler have access to quality accommodations that do not put them in financial hardship.”
Mayor of Whistler, Nancy Wilhelm-Morden –
“The municipality has always recognized the importance of housing our local workforce to the success of our community. We’ve housed 75 per cent of our workforce in Whistler for more than a decade, but with changes in the economy Whistler’s housing shortage has peaked and resolving this is a priority for our government. Thank you to the Province of British Columbia for recognizing the housing issue and investing in solutions.”
Marla Zucht, general manager, Whistler Housing Authority –
“The Whistler Housing Authority is thrilled and very appreciative to have received $2 million in funding from the B.C. government for Whistler’s newest affordable housing initiative. Whistler is committed to actively confronting housing affordability in our community through the creation of affordable housing that is price and occupancy restricted for our local workforce.”
“Over the last 20 years, the Whistler Housing Authority has partnered with all three levels of government, as well as the private sector, to create an inventory of over 6,300 beds of affordable housing. This funding and support provided by the Province will assist in the development of a new rental apartment building that will provide 100 new affordable rental beds for Whistler’s workforce. Ensuring that our employees have the opportunity to live locally enriches the social fabric of our community and contributes substantially to the ongoing prosperity of the local economy.”
