Premier Christy Clark has issued the following statement on the passing of Senator Len Marchand:
“I was deeply saddened to hear Len Marchand has passed away.
“Len was a trailblazer by nature. From high school to his time at UBC to Parliament Hill, Len made history time and time again as the first-ever Status Indian in his position.
“Looking back on a distinguished career in public service, including as a cabinet minister and senator, it’s remarkable to consider than when he was born, First Nations were not even permitted to vote. Because of the tireless, courageous efforts of Len and people like him, Canada is a very different – and better – place.
“His legacy will be a reminder that by working collaboratively and bringing people together, people can effect real and lasting change.
“My thoughts are with his family.”
