Premier Christy Clark issued the following statement on British Columbia’s 2016 Momentum for Change Award:
“It is an honour for B.C.’s revenue-neutral carbon tax to be recognized by the UN Climate Change Secretariat as an innovative and transformative solution in the fight against climate change.
"Our carbon tax — the first, highest and most comprehensive in North America — is showing it is possible to reduce harmful emissions while growing the economy and creating jobs at the same time.
"As other governments move to adopt carbon pricing, British Columbians can be proud that our carbon tax is an example to follow, held up by the UN as proof there is no need to choose between climate action and economic development.
"A carbon tax is one of many actions our province is taking to safeguard the future for our children and grandchildren, including:
- Methane reduction and electrification of the upstream;
- An ambitious re-forestation plan;
- Expanding our CEV program and charging-station infrastructure throughout B.C.;
- Encouraging net-zero buildings;
- And making B.C. a hub where marine vessels can be fuelled with liquefied natural gas, which could reduce global emissions by more than B.C.’s total emissions.
"As the world moves towards a lower carbon future, B.C. will continue to be a leader.”
