Premier Christy Clark has issued the following statement to mark the start of Chanukah:
“Tomorrow evening, Jewish communities will begin the celebration of Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights.
“The story of Chanukah is one of hope and courage. Over 2,000 years ago, the Jewish Maccabees rebelled against the persecution and tyranny of foreign rulers. They left the greatest possible legacy – thriving, vibrant communities around the globe.
“Over the next eight days, Jewish families and friends throughout the province will gather to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness by lighting candles on the chanukiah. Chanukah offers all British Columbians an opportunity to reflect on the importance of maintaining hope in the face of adversity.
“Chag Chanukah Sameach!”
