The BC Coroners Service has announced that a public inquest will be held into the death of Jacob George Setah.
The inquest will take place beginning April 11, 2016, at the Kamloops courthouse.
Mr. Setah, aged 18, was committed involuntarily under the Mental Health Act on June 9, 2014, and was being held at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops. On the evening of June 15, 2014, he fled from a secure ward and made his way to the top of a nearby parking structure. Kamloops RCMP members were sent to his location and were present when he sustained fatal injuries.
Presiding coroner Margaret Janzen and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses under oath to determine the facts surrounding this death. The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances.
An inquest is a formal process that allows for public presentation of evidence relating to a death.
