The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a female youth who died after being transported to hospital from Port Alberni RCMP cells on June 24, 2016.
She was Jocelyn Nynah Marsha George, aged 18, a resident of Port Alberni.
Ms. George was taken into custody by the Port Alberni RCMP and lodged in their cells on June 23, 2016. She was found the next morning to be in need of medical attention and an ambulance was summoned. Ms. George was transported to Westcoast General Hospital in Port Alberni and then sent by air ambulance to Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, where she died that evening.
The Coroners Service and the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) continue to investigate this death.
Ms. George's family has been notified of her death. On behalf of family members, the BC Coroners Service requests that the media respect their privacy during this difficult time.
