The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died after a hiking incident at Secretary-Treasurer Peak near Golden on July 14, 2016.
He is Ryan James McIntosh, aged 21, from Calgary, Alberta.
Mr. McIntosh was one of a group of four who had set up camp in the Little Yoho campground on July 14, 2016, and then went to hike up nearby Secretary-Treasurer Peak, about 20 km east of Golden. Mr. McIntosh and one of the others had reached the summit, but on the descent about 4 p.m., he lost his footing and fell more than 200 metres down a steep embankment.
Mr. McIntosh’s companion was able to trigger an emergency locator beacon to summon assistance. A Canadian Forces search-and-rescue plane was coincidentally refuelling at Golden, and immediately went to help. However, Mr. McIntosh was deceased at the scene.
The BC Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate this death.
Mr. McIntosh’s family has been notified of his death. On behalf of family members, the BC Coroners Service requests that the media respect their privacy during this difficult time.
