Highway 17, the South Fraser Perimeter Road, is now open in both directions after the ministry worked with the Delta Police Department to confirm that it was safe for travel.

The highway has been closed since 5 p.m. on July 3 to allow firefighters and first responders to respond to the 78-hectare Burns Bog fire. Over the last three days, fire crews used various highway locations as staging points to enter Burns Bog.

The highway was also closed because drifting smoke affected visibility on the highway for drivers, making travel unsafe.

The highway was not damaged by the fire. The ministry encourages drivers to drive cautiously in this area now that the highway has been opened.
