Construction has finished on a new eastbound passing lane that will enhance safety and the flow of traffic on Highway 16 east of Vanderhoof.
“Improving highway safety, capacity and mobility is a major component of our 10-year transportation plan, B.C. on the Move,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone. “We want to keep people and goods moving on Highway 16 and the new Degal passing lane allows a safe opportunity to pass, which improves traffic flow and reduces travel times for local residents, commercial drivers, tourists and recreational visitors.”
A.L. Sims and Son Ltd. of Prince George constructed the 1.5 kilometre long passing lane approximately 28 kilometres east of Vanderhoof near Degal Pit Road. The total estimated cost of the project is $5.35 million.
“Residents of the Nechako Lakes region who travel this stretch of Highway 16 regularly will be especially grateful to see this project finished,” said MLA John Rustad. “The passing lane will improve traffic bottlenecks and reduce frustrating delays, making our area a safer place to drive.”
This project is part of B.C. on the Move, the B.C. government’s 10-year plan for the improvement of the province’s transportation network.
