Motorists are advised that the new “no right turn on red” signal at the Highway 91 southbound off-ramp to Cliveden Avenue has been switched on as of this morning.
This new signal, combined with regulatory signs prohibiting right turns when the signal is red, will mean that people travelling along Highway 91 southbound onto Annacis Island at Cliveden Avenue must stop on the red light, and not turn right until there is a green light.
This signal will act as a deterrent to short-cutting onto Annacis Island. Too many drivers were using Annacis Island as a short cut during rush-hour commutes, which was blocking the entrances to businesses, causing congestion issues and safety concerns.
The ministry installed the “no right turn on red” signal to be co-ordinated with the existing intersection to ensure all movements are balanced to prevent short-cutters from using the left turn as well. New road signs have been installed to communicate the traffic pattern change to motorists.
This was the preferred short term solution from the 20-person working group. The working group included Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton, eight local business owners from Annacis Island, three ministry staff, and eight representatives from Corporation of Delta including Delta Fire and Delta Police.
Following an in-depth analysis of potential options, this working group concluded that the right turn signal offered the best overall short term solution. The working group will meet again to review early results and discuss any potential adjustments that could be made to further improve the situation.
