The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has awarded a contract to Alpine Paving Ltd. for $838,000 to construct a new left turning lane on the Sea to Sky Highway at the entrance to the Whistler Heliport.
“We are committed to continually making safety improvements on our provincial highways and side roads,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone. “The Whistler Heliport sees a great deal of traffic year round, from the heli-skiing industry, to shuttle buses, to regular vehicles, and this new left turn lane will improve safety for those turning into the heliport from the highway.”
The project involves constructing a new northbound left turn lane for traffic turning into the heliport from Highway 99, including associated drainage works and a new retaining wall, improving safety for all motorists on the highway.
Construction will start in mid-October, and is scheduled to be complete by the end of November 2016.
“Traffic volumes along the Sea to Sky continue to increase, especially with the many summer and winter recreational activities,” said West Vancouver-Sea to Sky MLA Jordan Sturdy. “It’s important that we keep pace with our infrastructure, and this heliport project contributes to our goal of enhancing safe and efficient year round travel.”
Drivers can expect single-lane alternating traffic along this section of Highway 99 during the daytime. Motorists are advised to check Drivebc.ca for more information if travelling through this area.
B.C. on the Move is government’s 10-year plan for the improvement of the province’s transportation network. Over the next three years, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure will invest up to $2.7 billion to improve B.C.’s transportation network.
