The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is committing $8 million in BikeBC funding to communities for 2017-18, to enhance and expand cycling infrastructure such as bike lanes, multi-use paths and trails, and cycling/pedestrian bridges. This includes an additional $2 million recently announced at UBCM.

“We are accepting applications for next year’s BikeBC program now and with this earlier intake, we’ll be able to provide funding decisions to municipalities earlier, which allows them to get started on their cycling projects sooner,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “And with the funding boost of $2 million next year, local governments will have more opportunities to make their communities safer for cyclists and encourage more residents to use cycling for commuting and for recreation.”

Through B.C. on the Move, the ministry has now committed $20 million over three years to the BikeBC program. This year alone, the cost-sharing program has already committed $6.5 million for 25 projects in 23 communities throughout the province to encourage cycling and walking for commuting, recreation and tourism.

To be considered for funding, local governments must describe how their project encourages cycling, increases safety, and contributes to increased physical activity and healthy living as part of their active community plans. The ministry also looks at how a project can increase tourism cycling opportunities.

Since 2001, the B.C. government has committed more than $220 million for cycling infrastructure, creating new bicycle lanes and trails in over 100 communities throughout the province.

Cycling contributes to increased physical activity and helps reduce greenhouse gases. As part of the development of the Climate Leadership Plan, the Climate Leadership team has recommended that government support the increased use of public transit and other mobility options (cycling and walking) that reduce GHG emissions.

Through B.C. on the Move, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure will invest almost $2.7 billion over the next three years to improve British Columbia’s transportation network.
