Resurfacing work in two areas on Vancouver Island is now complete with construction wrapped up along Highway 4 near Tofino and Hector Road in Port Alberni.
“Crews have been working to remove and replace damaged sections of pavement along Highway 4 as well as resurfacing Port Alberni’s Hector Road to create safer driving conditions for all those who travel these roads,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “Wider shoulders and smoother surfaces will benefit drivers, cyclists and pedestrians alike.”
Surface improvements were made to Highway 4 between Port Alberni and Tofino with a $3.2-million investment that will mean better driving conditions for residents, tourists and commercial truck traffic along this major corridor. These improvements were designed to allow better drainage, which means lower maintenance costs and a longer lasting roadway for years to come.
Prior to starting work, the government consulted with Tseshaht First Nation on the plans for Hector Road in Port Alberni – road resurfacing and improvements for pedestrians were flagged as priorities. As such, the government allocated $455,000 for asphalt resurfacing and newly paved shoulders along sections of Hector Road that connects to Highway 4.
As part of B.C. on the Move, government has dedicated $380 million to resurface provincial highways and $270 million to improve the condition of provincial side roads over three years.
