Pedestrians in the community of Okanagan Falls will find improved safety conditions with enhancements to the crosswalk at Highway 97 and Cedar Street.
“Ministry staff have been in discussions with Okanagan Falls and the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen following a petition circulated in the community calling for improvements to this intersection,” said MLA for Boundary-Similkameen Linda Larsen on behalf of Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “I’m pleased to see that those discussions have resulted in the ministry quickly moving forward on the installation of a special crosswalk at Highway 97 and Cedar Street.”
This crosswalk will be upgraded to a special crosswalk which consists of installing overhead signage with pedestrian activated amber flashing lights. The installation is expected to be completed by the end of November, which will make crossing the highway at this location safer for pedestrians accessing stores and services on both sides of Cedar Street.
The budget for this project is approximately $50,000.
The ministry is committed to funding community safety projects like this one as part of a new Road Safety Improvement Program, as announced in B.C. on the Move. The ministry will double the funding over previous years, which includes improvements to crosswalks, signals, intersections, and signage.
