Ardy Rigging Ltd. of Valleyview, Alberta, has won this year’s Deputy Minister’s Contractor of the Year Award of Excellence in the bridges and structures category, for the Hagwilget Bridge rehabilitation project located near New Hazelton.

“Hagwilget Bridge is a key transportation link in the region for commercial traffic, residents and visitors coming to this spectacular part of B.C.,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “Ardy Rigging did an exceptional job of keeping the bridge open to traffic as much as possible during the work, which was completed ahead of schedule, ensuring that regular traffic was able to resume as quickly as possible.”

The Hagwilget Bridge is a single-lane crossing over the scenic Bulkley River canyon and provides the only link between New Hazelton and Old Hazelton in the Kispiox Valley. The bridge is relied on for access to emergency services, schools and recreational activities. The rehab project included the replacement of the structural steel components on the bridge’s main towers and superstructure.

The Deputy Minister’s Contractor of the Year Award of Excellence recognizes construction and maintenance companies demonstrating excellence in the categories of grading, paving, bridges and structures, safety innovation, and highway maintenance work throughout the province.

The 14th annual awards were hosted by the B.C. Road Builders & Heavy Construction Association on Friday, Dec. 2 in Victoria.

The other finalists in this category were Eurovia BC of Surrey for the Highway 13 Bertrand Creek Bridge replacement and Surespan Construction of Vancouver for the Highway 29 Hudson Hope Bridge post-tensioning strand rehabilitation.
