Adventure Paving of Prince Rupert has won this year’s Deputy Minister’s Contractor of the Year Award of Excellence in the paving category, for the Tuck Inlet Road paving project in the community of Lax Kw’alaams.
“This project was a huge undertaking, considering all the equipment had to be transported via barge,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “Adventure Paving did an incredible job of completing this project on time and within the budget, under very challenging conditions.”
This was a large-scale paving project with a tight timeline and in a challenging climate. Tuck Inlet Road provides access to the community of Lax Kw'alaams and is only accessible via ferry or water taxi. All material, equipment and personnel had to be transported by barge to the inlet on a daily basis. Adventure Paving did an exceptional job of getting traffic to and from the ferry in this highly sensitive environmental area that is home to fish-bearing streams and orcas.
Adventure Paving had a strong working relationship with the Lax Kw’alaams First Nation and developed a First Nation Opportunities Plan that employed 21 members of the community and spent over $500,000 on materials and equipment; funds that went back into the community.
“The completed project ensures that Tuck Inlet Road provides safe and reliable access to the residents of Lax Kw'alaams and visitors to their community,” added Stone. “Congratulations to Adventure Paving and to all the finalists for their outstanding work on B.C.’s transportation network this year.”
The Deputy Minister’s Contractor of the Year Award of Excellence recognizes construction and maintenance companies demonstrating excellence in the categories of grading, paving, bridges and structures, safety innovation, and highway maintenance work throughout the province.
The 14th annual awards were hosted by the B.C. Road Builders & Heavy Construction Association on Friday, Dec. 2 in Victoria.
The other finalists in the paving category were Interoute Construction Ltd. DBA Selkirk Paving, for the Highway 6 Burton to Fauquier and local area side roads project, and Lafarge Canada Inc. for the Highway 10, 15, 91, 99 Lower Mainland resurfacing project.
