Northbound motorists on Highway 97 will experience improved conditions at the northbound pullout, approximately 10 kilometres south of Williams Lake, as work to improve the local amenities at this rest area is now complete.
“Whether you drive for a living or you just need to pull over and rest, motorists rely on safe, clean, well-lit rest areas,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “That’s why as part of B.C. on the Move, our 10-year transportation plan, the Province committed $9 million to constructing new modern facilities as well as making improvements to existing rest areas throughout the province. Drivers and motorists heading north, who need to make a stop south of Williams Lake on Highway 97, will be met with cleaner, brighter conditions, now that these improvements are complete.”
These improvements included:
- replacing two toilets;
- making the washrooms wheelchair accessible;
- installing luminaires; and
- improving the signage.
The estimated cost of these improvements is approximately $125,000. This is the only site north of the Big Bar Rest Area near Clinton that has facilities that can accommodate northbound truckers.
“The Cariboo Connector is a well-travelled corridor and critical link for industrial traffic so it is great to see these improvements have been made to the rest area outside of Williams Lake,” said MLA for Cariboo Chilcotin Donna Barnett. “Having a safe place to pull over and have a rest is important for the safety of the commercial trucking industry and other road users.”
