Road repairs are nearly completed along a 40-metre-long section of Highway 4 located approximately five kilometres south of the Ucluelet junction.
Both northbound and southbound lanes are expected to fully open to traffic by the end of the day today.
The highway was closed Dec. 2, 2016, after a landslide washed out a section of the road. Crews worked around the clock to re-open the highway to single-lane traffic the following day. The road has been open to single-lane, alternating traffic since Dec. 3.
The road is being rebuilt with gravel and an asphalt overlay. Crews are also adding perforated drain pipe and improving the ditching above the site to control drainage. The local maintenance contractor, Emcon Services Inc., with Gibson Bros Contracting, is undertaking the work and will return in summer 2017, when the weather conditions are more suitable, to add another layer of asphalt.
The ministry appreciates the continued patience of the traveling public while crews work to reconstruct the road and reopen both lanes to traffic. Motorists are reminded to use caution and obey traffic control personnel, as additional work at the site will continue throughout the weekend. DriveBC will post a notification when the road reopens to two-way traffic later today.
