While visiting the festivities at the 149th annual Saanich Fair today, Agriculture Minister Lana Popham dropped by the 4-H British Columbia display area and made a cheque presentation of $87,000 to 4-H British Columbia.
The funding is the B.C. government’s annual financial commitment that ensures B.C.’s future agriculture leaders are being supported today.
4-H British Columbia has provided leadership and opportunities for girls and boys in clubs throughout the province for more than 100 years. From the six-year-old Cloverbud member to the 21-year-old 4-H ambassador, 4-H British Columbia teaches the four H’s of head, heart, hands and health.
It has been a busy and exciting year for the program as 4-H B.C. youth were invited to participate in three events in honour of Royal Tour 2016 when Their Royal Highnesses, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and their children, visited British Columbia. The Children’s Party at Government house was a special highlight as Prince George and Princess Charlotte were presented with the 4-H Clubs animal projects to much delight.
The Ministry of Agriculture Youth Development staff deliver conferences to 4-H clubs on a range of topics, including careers in agriculture and rural youth leadership. The ministry also works closely with registered volunteers who tirelessly lend their time and knowledge in mentoring young British Columbians to not only meet the challenges of their own futures but also the future of their communities.
4-H British Columbia has almost 2,500 members in 135 clubs throughout the province. 2014 marked the 100th anniversary of 4-H in British Columbia and the strong tradition continues today.
