The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations will be assisting the Lytton First Nation with a prescribed burn to reduce wildfire threats in the Lillooet Fire Zone.
The burn is scheduled to start on Tuesday, March 28 and will be concluded by March 31, 2017. Trained wildfire crews will carefully control and monitor the fire at all times. Smoke and flames may be visible from the Village of Lytton and from Highway 1 and Highway 12.
The prescribed burn will cover 14 hectares near Stein Valley Nlakapamux school. The exact timing of the burn will depend on weather and site conditions. It will proceed only if conditions are suitable and will allow for quick smoke dissipation and low to moderate fire intensity.
This burn is in addition to a 3.5-hectare prescribed burn planned for the Lytton Creek gully, between Indian Reserve 17 and Ponderosa Way. The Lytton Creek gully burn is scheduled to begin today (March 27) and finish by Friday, April 7, if weather and site conditions are suitable.
The goal of these burns is to mimic naturally occurring ground fires and reduce accumulations of combustible material in grassland areas. Removal of these fuels will help reduce the threat of interface wildfires.
