People living in Little Fort, Clearwater and surrounding areas may notice  increased smoke and flame activity on the Dunn Lake Road wildfire this afternoon as crews initiate controlled burnoff operations to limit the fire’s spread.

These burning operations are weather-dependent and could begin as early as this afternoon (Wednesday, July 19, 2017). Fire crews will be supported by aircraft and heavy equipment.

When safe to do so, crews will light a controlled fire to remove unburned fuel between the fire guard and the existing wildfire perimeter. This reduces the chance of the wildfire breaching control lines. During burnoff operations, the fire will appear more active.

The wildfire is located in very steep, dangerous terrain. This burnoff is necessary to limit the potential growth and direction of the fire.

The 3,035-hectare Dunn Lake Road wildfire is 30% contained. Over 265 firefighters, 11 helicopters and 19 pieces of heavy equipment are dedicated to the Little Fort Complex fire, which includes the Dunn Lake Road, Thuya Lake Road and Lemieux Creek wildfires. Structural protection units (large sprinkler units) have also been assigned to this fire complex.

Protection of first responders, the public, critical infrastructure, private property and resource values are top priorities. The BC Wildfire Service is urging members of the public to stay out of the area where an area restriction order has been in effect since July 11, 2017.
