A 70-hectare wildfire about 15 kilometres northeast of Nelson has prompted the Regional District of Central Kootenay to issue an evacuation alert between Sitkum Creek and Crescent Bay, as a precautionary measure.
This fire is burning in steep and difficult terrain. BC Wildfire Service personnel are on site and were supported by airtankers the afternoon of Aug. 12, 2017. BC Wildfire Service personnel responded to 14 new lightning-caused wildfires on Aug. 12 throughout Southeast Fire Centre. Most of these wildfires are in high alpine areas and are not immediately threatening any communities or structures.
The Southeast Fire Centre extends from the U.S. border in the south to the Mica Dam in the north and from the Okanagan Highlands and Monashee Mountains in the west to the B.C.-Alberta border in the east. The Southeast Fire Centre includes the Selkirk Natural Resource District and the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District.
