Due to a slight decrease in fire behaviour over the past several days, regional districts within the Southeast Fire Centre have made adjustments to some evacuation alerts and evacuation orders in the region.
A summary of recent wildfire activity in the Southeast Fire Centre is provided below, as of the afternoon of Aug. 15, 2017:
Morley Creek wildfire
- The Morley Creek wildfire (formerly known as the Kokanee Creek wildfire) covers about 80 hectares.
- Twenty firefighting personnel are on site today, including an Incident Management Team from Australia. Crews continue to use direct attack techniques on this fire as conditions allow.
- As of noon on Aug. 15, 2017, the Regional District of Central Kootenay has rescinded the evacuation alert between Sitkum Creek and Crescent Bay. For more information, call 250 352-7701 or visit the district's website at www.rdck.ca
Island Pond wildfire
- The Island Pond wildfire covers about 1,032 hectares and is now 100% contained.
- Fifty-six personnel are on site today, supported by three pieces of heavy equipment. Crews have established a wet guard around the fire’s perimeter.
- The Regional District of East Kootenay rescinded its evacuation alert for the Island Pond/Premiere Lake area on Aug. 14, 2017. For more information, call 250 426-2188 or visit the district’s website at www.rdek.bc.ca
Galena wildfire
- The Galena wildfire covers about 250 hectares.
- Fourteen personnel are on site today working to build fire guards with the aid of heavy equipment.
- The Columbia Shuswap Regional District rescinded its evacuation alert for the Galena Bay area on Aug. 14, 2017. For more information, call 250 805-2020 or visit the district’s website at www.csrd.bc.ca
McCormick Creek wildfire
- The McCormick Creek wildfire covers about 337 hectares and is 40% contained.
- Thirty-four personnel are on site today building fire guards with the aid of four helicopters and 12 pieces of heavy equipment. There was no significant growth overnight on this fire.
- The Regional District of Central Kootenay has issued an evacuation alert and an evacuation order for some properties in this area. For more information, call 250 352-7701 or visit the district’s website at www.rdck.ca
- A section of Highway 6 that leads to Nelway remains closed in both directions from the British Columbia-Washington border to the junction of Highway 6 and Highway 3. For more information about this road closure, visit www.drivebc.ca
White River complex wildfire
- The White River wildfire and the Grave Creek wildfire are now being referred to as the White River complex wildfire, because they are near the same forest service roads that currently have restrictions in place.
- These fires are about 15 kilometres apart and did not experience any significant growth in recent days.
- The White River wildfire covers about 1,214 hectares, while the Grave Creek wildfire covers about 980 hectares. The combined size of this complex is 2,194 hectares and are together designated as a Wildfire of Note on the BC Wildfire Service website at www.bcwildfire.ca
- To support fire suppression activities and protect public safety, there is a modified road closure (to non-industrial traffic only) on the White-Middle Fork Forest Service Road at the 45.5-kilometre mark as well as on the White-Grave Forest Service Road beginning at the 44-kilometre mark. The Southeast Fire Centre extends from the U.S. border in the south to the Mica Dam in the north and from the Okanagan Highlands and Monashee Mountains in the west to the B.C.-Alberta border in the east. The Southeast Fire Centre includes the Selkirk Natural Resource District and the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District.
