The BC Wildfire Service is planning to burn piles of wood debris from a fuel treatment project in the Sitkum Creek area (about 11 kilometres northeast of Nelson) on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2017.
The goal is to remove the flammable material and reduce the risk of aggressive wildfires in this area in the future.
The pile burning will only proceed if weather conditions are favourable for quick smoke dissipation. Wind speed, direction, venting and burning conditions will all be considered prior to ignition to minimize the amount of smoke generated.
Smoke and flames from these fires may be visible from Nelson, the North Shore, Six Mile, Crescent Bay and Harrop, and along Highway 3A. Trained crews and firefighting equipment will be on site to monitor and control these burns.
To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.
