Communities in northern British Columbia are connected to the world as never before with the opening of Fairview Terminal’s expanded container facility at the Port of Prince Rupert.
Minister of Jobs, Trade and Technology Bruce Ralston was on hand – along with officials from Fairview Terminal’s owner and operator, DP World, the Port of Prince Rupert, local First Nations and other stakeholders – for the official opening of the Fairview Phase 2 North project, which increases the terminal’s annual container capacity by 60% to 1.35 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units).
The two-year, $200-million project was financed by DP World, a major global container-handling company headquartered in Dubai. With this expansion, the Port of Prince Rupert becomes the second-largest container shipping facility in Canada and can now accommodate the largest container vessels in the world.
The growth of the Port of Prince Rupert over the past 10 years has led to significant development of services related to rail, trucking and warehousing throughout the northern B.C. corridor. For example, CN Rail’s intermodal yard in Prince George has grown significantly due to the increase in container traffic at the Port of Prince Rupert.
The Government of British Columbia is committed to creating the conditions that support continued growth in private investment and the creation of jobs, where all regions of the province are benefiting in a sustainable, shared economy.
