Teresa Wat, Minister of International Trade and Minister Responsible for Asia Pacific Strategy and Multiculturalism, issued this statement today:
“On behalf of the Province of British Columbia, it gives me great pleasure to send the Muslim community my warmest wishes as today marks the beginning of Ramadan, a month of sharing, self-sacrifice and renewal.
“Ramadan traditionally begins with a new moon sighting, indicating the start of the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. For a lunar month, Muslims throughout British Columbia will fast during daylight hours, an act of faith that teaches patience, self-discipline, empathy and charity.
“The Muslim community joins many others throughout our multicultural province to create a strong and vibrant social and economic future for British Columbia.
“Reaching out to our neighbours through celebrations such as this is an important way to strengthen our cultural ties.
“I wish the Muslim community best wishes and much happiness during this significant time.”
