Tofino will receive $1 million in BikeBC funding this year for Phase 1 of a multi-use path extension to the Pacific Rim National Park, providing more safe cycling infrastructure in the community, announced Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone.
“Tofino is known for its world-class tourism attractions and experiences enjoyed by residents and tourists alike,” said Stone. “Pacific Rim National Park is the jewel in Tofino’s crown, so extending the multi-use path in the park will provide more opportunities to explore this beautiful part of B.C. and provide the community with the economic benefits from increased tourism activities in the region.”
The new path will be a 2.5 kilometre separated two-way cycling path that will be routed along the east side of Pacific Rim Highway from the Tofino Information Center to the northern boundary of the Pacific Rim National Park (Long Beach). It will connect with the existing 6.5 kilometre path that connects downtown Tofino to local surfing beaches.
This project is part of $9.25 million in funding this year for cycling infrastructure projects throughout the province, including bike lanes, multi-use trails and improvements to roads and highways to improve the safety of cyclists. Through B.C. on the Move, the government’s 10-year transportation plan, the ministry has now committed $20 million over three years to the BikeBC program.
BikeBC is the Province’s cost-sharing program that helps communities build cycling projects that attract and support commuter and tourism cyclists. Since 2001, the Government of British Columbia has invested more than $230 million in cycling grants and infrastructure throughout the province.
Over the next three years the ministry and its partners are investing over $4.6 billion in priority transportation investments as part of B.C. on the Move.
